2009 National Bereavement Teleconference - Diversity and End-of-Life Care
Wednesday, April 29, 2009

HFA is pleased to announce that a date has been announced for our 16th annual National Bereavement Teleconference! "Diversity and End-of-Life Care" will be broadcast Wednesday, April 29 from 1:30p-4p ET. The program will focus on ways of understanding diversity and how cultural histories, traditions and beliefs can affect end of life care.

Hospice Foundation of America is now offering advertising space in our printed Teleconference Program to businesses and supporters of HFA. To place an advertisement in HFA’s teleconference program, call Kristen Baker at 800-854-3402, or send an email to kbaker@hospciefoundation.org. The deadline to submit is February 10, 2009. All advertising proceeds are used to support the HFA teleconference. See the rates.


Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of the teleconference, participants will be able to:

  1. Define diversity and discuss sources of diversity such as ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, religion, and disability;
  2. Describe the ways that cultural diversity can both complicate and facilitate end-of-life experiences, including grief and adaptation to loss;
  3. Discuss the knowledge, sensitivities, and skills necessary to work with culturally-diverse populations in end-of-life care;
  4. Assess the challenges hospice and palliative care present for culturally diverse groups including, but not limited to, African-Americans, Latinos/Hispanics, Asians and Islamic-Americans;
  5. Describe effective strategies and programs to work with end-of-life issues with culturally diverse populations including, but not limited to, African-Americans, Asians, Latinos/Hispanics, and Islamic-Americans.
