Message from David Abrams, President
Thank you to everyone who participated in our 15th annual National Bereavement Teleconference, "Living With Grief: Children and Adolescents." We are pleased that the teleconference
continues to reach such a large audience across the country, and wanted to share
two comments that reflect the importance of this program.
. . . I valued the insights of the children, and the clinical directors of the summer
camp and the various grief centers. For that reason, this was the best teleconference
I can remember of the 14 I have attended.
This was my first experience as a site coordinator and our agency's first experience
with being a webcast site. I was so pleased with the ease of putting this together
because of the support materials HFA provided and the ease of communicating with
your staff. It was a wonderful networking experience for us as we had representatives
from our school district and other community agencies and individuals that offer
counseling and support services for children.
Our 2009 teleconference will focus on ways of understanding the impact of cultural
diversity at the end of life; please watch upcoming issues of this e-newsletter
for more information.

Focus on: Follow-Up Questions from Living With Grief: Children and Adolescents
HFA's teleconference features some of the best-known experts in the field of grief
and loss. While the goal of the program is to share new insights and tangible ideas
that can be put to use to help grieving children and adolescents, HFA strives to
hear from professionals who are working with children every day. Prior to the broadcast,
HFA solicited questions from Site Coordinators. Many of these questions were worked
into the program, but as a follow-up we have included a few more here with answers from Dr. Kenneth J. Doka.

for children and adolescents. Contributors include Kenneth Doka (editor), Charles
Corr, Nancy Hogan, Bruce Jennings, Donna Schuurman and J. William Worden. See a
full Table of Contents here.

HFA's recent National Bereavement Teleconference, Living With Grief: Children and
Adolescents, will be available on DVD after June 1. These DVDs make excellent training
tools as well as a resource for community organizations interested in helping children
cope with grief and loss. The full-length program costs $25 and can be ordered
here.
HFA has two new special issues of
Journeys,
a newsletter to help in bereavement. The first new special issue, "Introduction
to Hospice," addresses choosing hospice, the challenges of facing loss, opportunities
for reminiscence, and self-care for caregivers. Another special issue, "Spring Holidays,"
focuses on grief surrounding holidays such as Mother's Day, Easter and Passover,
Father's Day and graduation.
HFA is now making individual book chapters available for online purchase .
The chapters are available in PDFs for a low cost of $2.50 each and may be downloaded
to your home or office computer. We have put chapters from the last three books
online: Living with Grief: Before and After the Death (2007); Living with Grief:
Pain Management at the End of Life (2006), and Living with Grief: Ethical Dilemmas
at the End of Life (2005). You can read descriptions of each chapter before purchasing.
