Message from David Abrams, President
----------------------------------------

During our recent teleconference, Kenneth Doka mentioned a model program that combines adult day care for persons with dementia with daycare for children.  That program was ONEgeneration. Many of our teleconference viewers have asked for more information about the program, so this month we talked with Kelly Bruno, Vice President of Intergenerational Programming, and feature more about the program below.

Work on our 2005 teleconference, "Living With Grief: Ethical Dilemmas at the End of Life," is well underway. This e-newsletter will be the first place where we will announce the date, so stay tuned!

Focus on: ONEgeneration
----------------------------------------

ONEgeneration Daycare provides day care services for both frail seniors (stroke victims and those suffering from Alzheimer's and Parkinson's) and children (ages 6 weeks to 6 years). The program has proven very successful, and ONEgeneration has conducted research to support the belief that this type of intergenerational programming can have a positive impact on adults with Alzheimer's disease. Read more about ONEgeneration.

In the News

The Hastings Center recently published an article entitled, "Enough: The Failure of the Living Will," by Angela Fagerlin and Carle Schneider. The authors purport that, "In pursuit of the dream that patients' exercise of autonomy could extend beyond their span of competence, living wills have passed from controversy to conventional wisdom, to widely promoted policy. But the policy has not produced results, and should be abandoned." (Hastings Center Report, 4-5/2004)

The University of Miami Ethics Programs have launched a web-based resource on the Terri Schiavo case, including a timeline of critical events, a selected bibliography, and streaming video of conference presentations on the case, and associated documents.
