Message from David Abrams, President
------------------------------------------------------------

On April 28, HFA will broadcast its eleventh annual National Bereavement Teleconference, "Living With Grief: Alzheimer's Disease." The teleconference has come to be recognized as the leading grief and bereavement training program in the country, having reached over three quarter of a million professionals in communities across the US and Canada. We thank everyone who has participated and plans to join us this year. This year's topic is one that has the potential to touch us all either personally or professionally in the near future, and we thank those site coordinators who are bringing it into their communities. We also want to thank the national organizations that are providing HFA with support. We invite you to think of ways to spread the word about the program and encourage participation in your community, and we've listed some ways below to help you do that. Consider partnering with a local chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, or contacting your local Area Agency on Aging to get them involved.

------------------------------------------------------------
Focus on: HFA Supporters and Partners
------------------------------------------------------------

The following organizations are all doing important work in the field of Alzheimer's disease and grief. We are grateful to them for their support of our 11th annual National Bereavement Teleconference. Sponsored in part by a grant from:
The Foundation for End-of-Life Care, whose goal is to transform dying into the final act of living well. The Foundation is committed to improving end-of-life care for individual patients and their families while supporting fundamental, societal change and will champion this change through research, education and advocacy.

In cooperation with:
The Alzheimer's Association, which is the largest national voluntary health organization dedicated to advancing Alzheimer's research and helping those affected by the disease. The Association provides education and support for people diagnosed with the condition, their families, and caregivers. Housed in the national offices of the Association is the Benjamin B. Green-Field National Alzheimer's Library and Resource Center, the nation's first privately funded resource facility focusing on Alzheimer's disease.

The Adventist Communication Network, which will broadcast the teleconference live over its national network with more than 1,300 satellite locations. Many members of the ACN will make their facilities available to local groups who wish to host a teleconference site in their communities. To find the nearest Adventist Communication Network site and check availability, call ACN at 1-800-226-1119.

The Association for Death Education and Counseling, a multi-disciplinary professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence in death education, bereavement counseling, and care of the dying.

The U.S. Administration on Aging, the Federal focal point and advocate agency for older persons and their concerns. The AoA is home to the Alzheimer's Disease Demonstration Grants to States (ADDGS) Program and the National Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP).

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which operates the largest direct health care delivery system in the country. Veterans with dementia who receive care from VA's network of health care facilities participate in the full range of health care services, including outpatient, acute care and long term care programs. Continuing education for staff caring for patients with dementia at VA facilities and in the community is provided through training classes sponsored by VA Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Centers (GRECCs) and VA's network of education field units.

What's New
------------------------------------------------------------

In conjunction with HFA's upcoming teleconference, the Alzheimer's Association has created a reading list on Hospice and Palliative Care in Alzheimer's disease. The list includes books, videos, and articles relevant to both professionals and family caregivers. Hospice Foundation of America is grateful to the Alzheimer's Association for their continued interest in this area. (This link is no longer available.)

The February 1st edition of the New York Times ran an article on the special ways that loss and grief affects senior level executives. Reporter Eve Tahmincioglu explored how high level executives, including CEOs, are expected to continue their work seamlessly, but how difficult that becomes when losses of loved ones severely hamper their ability to cope. Kenneth J. Doka, Bereavement Consultant to Hospice Foundation of America, is quoted in the article as the editor of "Living With Grief: At Work, At School, At Worship," HFA's publication on grief in the workplace. See http://www.nytimes.com for the article, or contact 800-854-3402 for a fax copy. Dr. Doka was a member of the scientific advisory committee for the study, "A Report on Bereavement and Grief Research," recently released by The Center for the Advancement of Health.
