Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter - June 2002

Hospice Foundation of America E-Newsletter
Volume 2, Issue 6
June 2002

------------------------------------------------------------
Message from David Abrams, President
------------------------------------------------------------

In response to reader input on our recent survey, we are implementing a new newsletter feature. Periodically we will talk with professionals who are making an impact in the field of care at the end of life. We've worked hard to keep the contents of this e-newsletter brief, yet informative, in recognition of the pressures you face in your work; these interviews will take the same approach. We welcome your feedback on this new feature, including suggestions of others in the field from whom you'd like to hear. Please send any comments to questions@hospicefoundation.org

Our initial interview is with William Lamers, M.D., Medical Consultant to Hospice Foundation of America.

------------------------------------------------------------
Focus on: A Discussion with Dr. Bill Lamers
------------------------------------------------------------

Please join us for an interview with Dr. Lamers, a pioneer in the field of hospice and end-of-life training for professionals. Dr. Lamers discusses how his interest in these issues developed; the changes he has seen since the beginning of the hospice movement in the U.S., both among professionals and consumers; and the impact that the Internet is having on end-of-life decision-making.

What's New@HFA
------------------------------------------------------------

Dr. Lamers was recently interviewed in an article entitled, "I did not want to die." (This link is no longer available.)Written by Jeremy Meyer and published in The Gazette (Colorado Springs, CO), the article is a moving and powerful examination that challenges the notion of "a good death", and reminds readers that people die as they live.

HFA has released an instructional VHS videotape that serves as a companion resource to its autobiographical workbook, "A Guide to Recalling and Telling Your Life Story." The tape and award-winning workbook were designed to assist both professionals and laypeople in the process of creating an autobiography. The videotape can be purchased separately or with the Guide. For more information or to order.

Site Coordinator's Corner

Don't forget to watch this newsletter for the date announcement of our 10th annual National Bereavement Teleconference, "Living With Grief: Coping With Public Tragedy."

Thanks to the more than 800 Site Coordinators who offered Continuing Education Unit credits through HFA. Annually, HFA's teleconference is approved by more than 85 different state boards, more than any distance-learning program in the country. We want to be sure that we're reaching as many professionals through this service as possible. While realizing that not every board or every profession will approve our program, we welcome any comments or suggestions from site coordinators on how to expand our CEU program.

Please send your ideas to telecon@hospicefoundation.org
